Description
Portal School 22, a one-room schoolhouse, was built in 1890 south of Portal township in Sarpy County, Nebraska. In the early 1900s the town was abandoned because of the frequent flooding of the nearby Papillion Creek. Most of the inhabitants moved to Papillion which was just north and east. The school itself was still used for many years. It was the last eight-grade rural school in Sarpy County to close its doors. In the mid 1990s, the building was moved to the center of Papillion and placed next to the historic Sautter House and across from the County Courthouse. During the holidays, the schoolhouse and trees surrounding it are festooned with lights and the result, especially when it snows, is this very pretty Christmas card look.
A horizontal version of this scene is also available in my Winter and Christmas gallery.
