Description
The yellow garden spider, (Argiope aurantia) is quite common in North and Central America. It has a number of other common names including the golden or corn spider. Because of the zigzag pattern it weaves in its web (seen here), it is also sometimes called the writing spider. This part of the web has a special name, the stabilimentum; it's not known what purpose, exactly, it serves. This spider does bite but its bite is not usually bothersome to humans.
