Description
Though natively a tropical plant and a perennial in Central and South America, the cardinal vine (Ipomoea) also flourishes as an annual in colder climates. Even more than the deep red, trumpet shaped flowers (it's related to the morning glory), it was the deeply lobed, triangular leaves that caught and held my attention. In this close up, the various shades of green, created more by the play of strong light and deep shadow than by actual leaf coloration, dominate, but bits of the reddish stems also show through here and there.
