Description
Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) are dabbling ducks, common throughout much of the world. The way they feed is characteristic of this type of waterfowl – they eat underwater aquatic life by tipping forward into the water rather than by diving. That means that when they are feeding, one’s view of them is often of their tail and feet as was the case with this upended female mallard. I did wait patiently for shots that would better show off the lovely brown, black, and white plumage – as well as her mate’s showy green head; but more often than not, this was the view I had of one or the other of them. So I decided to pair the photo with the popular celebration toast, “Cheers!” and the familiar “Bottoms Up” that is often added.
