Description
This woman has taken on the role of a laundress for the living history weekends at Fort Atkinson in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. It's a sunny day and she is taking advantage of the light streaming into the room, a former barracks, where she sits mending linens and uniforms for the soldiers who are assigned there. This military installation was only active for a few years in the 1820's. The washerwomen or laundresses were engaged and paid by the United States Government.
