Description
A weathered metal sign spelling "OPEN" is affixed to a rusty red pipeline, indicating a valve position. Surrounding the sign, bolts and metallic structures suggest industrial machinery or piping.
In fact, this is a post indicator valve (PIV) and the word "OPEN" indicates that the system is open to allow water to flow into the sprinkler system from the domestic water system if the sprinklers have to activate because of a fire. On the building behind the valve are two silver fire department connections (FDC) where the firemen would connect the engine to help supply or augment the sprinkler system in the building.
Of course it was the texture and especially the lovely reddish orange colors of the pipe and handle that caught my eye - that and the word "Open". A shallow depth of field threw the brick wall some feet behind the post out of focus and made a not unpleasing background for this industrial detail.
