Description
What first catches the eye here are the layers of light, texture, and color in the rippled water, the reflections, the matted algae, the reeds, and the foliage beyond them. The large, wading bird just stepping out of an opening in the thick grasses growing near the lake's shoreline is a bonus, an unexpected but delightful point of interest in what was already a pleasing natural abstract.
The great blue heron, Ardea herodias, is native to North America. It is common in wetlands, lakes, and other inland bodies of fresh water.
