Description
This bird perched at a distance, too far away for a good great blue heron (Ardea herodias) portrait shot, but picture perfect, I thought, in terms of the interest it brought to this composition. These large water birds or waders are common to wetlands in most of North America; I photographed this one at Heron Haven in Omaha, Nebraska. The quotation I selected to go with this illustration is from Thomas Carlyle: "Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you'll be able to see further." There is much disagreement as to whether "farther" or "further" is appropriate; I finally settled on the latter as I felt it can be taken literally (in terms of distance) but is also open to a figurative interpretation (do as much as you can . . . once you have, you may find you can do more).
