Description
A simple kitchen still life combines a stack of plates in varying sizes, a saucer, and a cup with a small, round vase filled with fresh white flowers. On the wall behind the table is a framed picture of the same scene . . . and in that picture is a picture of the same scene . . . This is known as the Droste effect, a picture recursively appearing within itself. It creates something that could theoretically repeat itself indefinitely; realistically, in photography and visual art, it only goes on as far as the image's quality or the eye can discern. The effect is popular in a number of well-known advertisements. Tins and boxes of Droste cocoa powder, a brand of Dutch cocoa, were the first to make use of it, but the recursive effect has also been popularized by Land o' Lakes butter, Laughing Cow cheese spread, and Morton salt.
