Description
In a whimsical composition that brings the country to the city, a patch of green grass on a rooftop gives three hens a little space to do what chickens do so well . . . hunt and peck. These are Plymouth barred rock hens and they are very well behaved. They have promised not to fly off the building (and I'm sure their owner, who loves them dearly, has taken precautions to make sure they cannot do so) in return for some room to move about, a little peace and quiet, and generously scattered seeds above the bustle of their new urban environment. The prominent, boxlike, brick structure is an enclosure over the stairwell; it's variously referred to as a stair house or stair bulkhead.
