Description
A lone figure, actually a guide at the historic Mont-Saint-Michel abbey in Lower Normandy, France, sits at a table reading in the grand refectory (dining hall) of the monastery. Parts of the structure date from the 10th century, the hall itself to the 13th century. The limestone walls are colonnaded and support a beautiful arc vaulted ceiling (not seen here). The Romanesque style windows are tall and narrow (20 feet high and five feet wide); the reader seen here has carefully chosen his place for the light spilling in there.
