These two old tires hang on the side of the left center pier at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. They serve as bumpers for barges and other watercraft exiting or waiting to enter one of the locks. The locks allow ships to travel between Lake Superior and Lake Huron by bypassing the rapids on the St. Mary's River. Our boat tour of the locks was fascinating and I spent most of the time photographing the locks themselves and the crafts passing through them - everything from ocean liners to barges to tour boats to small fishing vessels.. However, when we had downtime during a lengthy wait for our turn to enter the locks, I looked around for other subjects. Among them I found these old tires, designed to protect both the concrete of the pier and the sides of the boats themselves should they come in contact with one another.
