Description
A vintage upright Underwood rests on a table near a window. The curtains are drawn back and the light from outside illuminates the top and side of the machine while leaving the keyboard in shadow. This type of typewriter is also known as a standard as opposed to the lighter weight portables. Because of its weight, a good typist could actually type much faster on an upright - it didn't scoot around, even when the carriage return was thrown with force. My dad was a newspaperman and used one of these for years - long past the time when they were no longer "popular". I was always amazed at the speed with which his fingers flew over the keys.
I photographed this particular vintage scene in the home of Robert Frost in Derry, New Hampshire, and I have given it a painted look that is most obvious on the pulled back sheers and the leaves outside.
