Description
The unfolding flower of the bloodroot (sanguinaria Canadensis) stands above its clasping leaf. This wildflower is native to the eastern United States, extending as far as the Mississippi embayment. It is a small, shade loving plant that grows on the floor of undisturbed woods. I found this one in a wetland sanctuary in Omaha, Nebraska. The plant itself has been used historically in alternative medicine, but it is toxic and its use as a medicinal plant is ill-advised.
