Description
This blue spruce, also commonly called a Colorado spruce, is native to North America, specifically the southwestern states: Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Idaho. This particular specimen was growing as an ornamental in a yard in eastern Nebraska. The blue leaves or needles are especially pretty in the winter, I think, and have a frosted look even when they aren't covered with snow. An evergreen or coniferous tree, the spruce has cones that are distinctive for their flat, densely packed scales and the fact that the cones point downward; in contrast, fir cones, similar in some ways, point upward.. The Colorado blue spruce is that state's tree.
