Description
Crabapple autumn
exhilarates the senses -
harvest festival.
Crabapple trees (Malus) belong to the same family (Rosaceae) as domesticated orchard apples. This particular flowering variety grows beside a walking path in a local park here in eastern Nebraska. In the spring, it's covered with blossoms which are a source of pollen for bees and other insects. Tiny fruits develop in the summer and cover it the rest of the year, a source of food for birds that overwinter here as well as those that visit during their spring migration.
