Description
This tree squirrel, an Eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), is native to Eastern North America. Very common in our area, they are alternately loved and detested by home owners, gardeners, and bird lovers. These tiny animals are what is called "scatter-hoarders". They collect food and hide it in different places for retrieval later - either within hours or days or even months later. This little guy was exploring a pumpkin we'd put out in the back yard when he paused, lifted his head, and listened intently as if to locate a tiny and distant but distinctly heard sound. At the very moment when I shot this photo, a falling leaf floated into the frame, and I had my title, "Did I Hear a Leaf Fall?"
