Description
Charlevoix, Michigan, is located on a strip of land between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix. A lighthouse - actually just a square, open-frame tower with an iron lantern on top - and an elevated walkway for access to it were first erected there on the north pier in 1885. In the early 1900's, the channel between the north and south piers was widened for navigation, and in 1914 the lighthouse was moved to the south pier. In the late 1940's, a metal structure replaced the old wooden tower, now automated. Eventually the Coast Guard declared Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse excess and it was awarded to the city of Charlevoix in 2008. From 1968-2009, the light was white; in 2009, as part of extensive restoration work on the tower, the local historical society repainted it this bright red, the color it had been previously.
