Description
Built in 1870, Mission Point Light is situated on the end of a peninsula that juts into Lake Michigan north of Traverse City. It was deactivated in 1933. Built at the edge of a sandbank, protecting the structure and the dunes it’s on from erosion has been a struggle since the beginning. The lighthouse is owned by the state of Michigan and managed by Peninsula Township as part of a larger Lighthouse Park; it has been open to visitors during the summer since 2008. These wooden stairs lead from the lighthouse grounds to the beach of Lake Michigan.
