Description
Ludington North Breakwater Light stands at the end of a half-mile long, concrete pier. When Lake Michigan is calm, visitors can walk out and climb the tower. That was not the case when we were there in early September. The walkway was completely submerged and the waves were crashing around the base of the light. I had to content myself with a few shots taken from the parking lot in Stearns Park; even braced against the car, I was so buffeted by the wind that I had trouble getting an in-focus shot. The current light, made of steel plates over a steel skeleton, was constructed in 1924. Its pyramidal shape was selected to deflect the strong waves of the lake.
