Description
At the south entrance to the Prairie Union Cemetery in the southeast corner of Nebraska stands this memorial statue of a Union soldier standing at parade rest. Adjacent to a Baptist church of the same name, the cemetery is about midway between the small towns of Stella and Shubert. The first burial is thought to date from 1861, on the property of Joseph Main; he later donated an acre of land for public use. A few years later another nearby landowner gave land to the nearby Prairie Union Church and the cemetery acquired that name. The cemetery now covers eight acres.
