Description
We were lucky enough to visit Yaquina Head near Newport, Oregon, in the summer when high sand levels create sandbars beyond the normal tide level keeping the high water farther out. That results in amazing fingers of shallow water that shelter any number of adaptable sea animals and organisms such as mussels, anemones, urchins, barnacles, and seaweed which must cope with a habitat that has constantly changing water levels, temperatures, oxygen content, and salinity. Visitors are allowed and even encouraged to explore the pools - provided that they step only on bare rocks. The beach itself, called Cobble Beach, is not sandy but is rather made up of small, round, polished rocks that vary in size. To say that they are difficult to walk on is an understatement; keeping one's balance is definitely the biggest challenge to exploring this fascinating marine wonderland.
