Description
Construction of the first Soo Locks, intended to allow freighters and other large ships to navigate the rapids of the Saint Mary’s River between Lake Superior and the other Great lakes, began in the mid 19th century. At about the same time, Congress appropriated funds for a lighthouse at Point Iroquois at the point where Whitefish Bay on the eastern end of Lake Superior transitions into the upper Saint Mary’s River. The first light station was a stone tower with wooden lantern deck. It was torn down less than 20 years later and the current, white brick lighthouse was constructed.
