Description
The first lighthouse at Point Iroquois was constructed in 1855; it was torn down and replaced in 1870. The purpose of the light was to guide freighters and other ships between Lake Superior’s eastern end (Whitefish Bay) and the St. Mary’s River. Construction on the Soo Locks began in the mid 1850’s; the locks made it possible for large ships to navigate the rapids on the river which connects Lake Superior to Lake Huron and the other Great Lakes.
