Description
Agave Americana is a drought tolerant monocot with succulent leaves; though it is often thought of as a cactus, it is not a member of that family. It is often called the century plant though it only lives about 30 years. Another common name is American aloe - though it is not closely related to that genus. It is popular as an ornamental plant in some Southwestern states as well as in Mexico and further south. The variety here is marginata. It has wide, gray-green leaves with cream colored edges. Agaves are also called mezcales; when fermented, the juice of the plant has a very high alcohol content and is called mescal. It is used in the distillation of tequila.
Here I present the leaves in a square format and against a purple background. The enhanced colors make this a perfect companion piece for “Graptopetalum Paraguayense - Square” or Portulacaria Afra - Square". You will find all three images in my Cacti and Other Succulents collection.
