Description
The white gypsum sand of White Sands Monument in southern New Mexico takes on a pinkish cast in the early morning light. Here the subtle patterns of a gently rippled dune support both the composition and a row of spiky soaptree yucca on its ridge. These hardy desert plants are native to hot, arid parts of the Americas. They are drought tolerant and well adapted to the challenge of life in the ever shifting dunes as they grow quickly and put out new leaves above the surface on the stalk as soon as they are partially buried by the moving sands. The yucca is the state flower of New Mexico; when they bloom, the flowers are white, but it was October and the tall stalks bore only the dried seed pods.
