Description
This small chapel at Mission Soledad (also Mision Nuestra Senora de la Soledad) is located in a small town of the same name in California's Salinas Valley. A Franciscan mission, founded in 1791, it predated the town which is named for it. The mission itself fell into disrepair some 50 years later; it was another 100 years before a restoration project was begun in 1954. The chapel, still a functioning parish chapel, was dedicated a year later. Its architectural and decor styles are typical of the California Mission period: deep-set windows; beamed ceilings; thick, stucco walls; giant iron candle holders; and simple designs in the painted ornamentation.
