Description
Redwood burls are huge growths on the trunk or at the base of a coast redwood tree. On the trunk, they result from an injury forming above it and grow down to protect the open wound. At the base of the giant trees they are called lignotubers and start growing when the tree is young. They help the roots anchor the massive trees which have relatively shallow root system and often grow where the ground is rocky or the soil is thin. As you can see, their shapes are fascinating and the insides are intricately patterned. They are prized for wood turned bowls and table tops.
