Description
A pair of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) makes their way across the furrows of a cornfield in the Platte River valley in south central Nebraska. These birds are migrating from their winter grounds in the Southwestern states and northern Mexico. They have a spring stop-over in this area - over a quarter of a million birds are here at one time, roughly between mid February and mid-April. Nebraska is the only central flyway state that does not allow hunting of the sandhill crane. They seem to know that they are safe here and can take their time feeding and gathering strength for the rest of their journey to northern states, Canada, Alaska and Siberia.
