Description
The Iowa Women of Achievement Bridge, a landmark of the downtown area of Des Moines, Iowa, spans the Des Moines River. It was dedicated in 2013; its purpose is to recognize and honor notable women who have contributed to Iowa life and culture throughout the state's history. Linking the east and west sides of the city, the bridge is on the northern edge of the Principal Riverwalk, a nearly one and a quarter mile long walk along both banks of the river. The bridge includes paths for both pedestrians and cyclists. The spillway in the lower portion of the frame is the Center Street dam. Built in 1917, it was intended to provide both power and recreation for the citizens. Unfortunately, twelve people have died in the waters below the dam and the state is looking at removing or re-structuring it.
