Description
The white-lined sphinx moth (Hyles lineata) is commonly called the hummingbird moth because of its size, flight pattern, and the speed of its wings. These insects can have a 2-3 inch wingspan, they hover when foraging nectar, and the rate of their wingbeats per second (85 per second) is actually faster than that of a hummingbird (50 per second).
They are most active at night when they prefer white or light-colored flowers, but can also be seen during the day, as here, when they are attracted to bright colors.
