Description
Whether carefully cultivated or growing almost wild, black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) and purple cone flowers (Echinacea purpurea) never fail to attract attention. I spotted this casual cluster, growing well back from the mowed shoulder of a walking and biking path and almost into the denser undergrowth of a wooded area, while I was out photographing butterflies. Though none were visiting these blossoms at the moment I stopped to take this picture, the butterflies, bees, and other pollinators were just as attracted to the blossoms as I was. The height of the three central coneflowers made it clear that they were growing just far enough forward of the others to catch more of the light that filtered through the overhead foliage.
