Description
Because of its small size, slender body, and the position of the wings when resting, I believe this to be a tiny damselfly though damselflies and dragonflies are often used interchangeably. I couldn't get very close and this one flew off before I could get more than a couple of shots, but I was so taken with its position in that opening and under the umbrella-like leaf arching overhead that I decided to keep the photo. Both insects belong to the order Odonata; damselflies are in the suborder Zygoptera. This particular specimen is probably a female as males are usually brightly colored. Damselflies favor freshwater habitats; I found this one near a small flowing creek.
