Description
This little widow skimmer dragonfly (Libellula luctuosa) was balanced on a twig projecting out of a pond. This one sat here for quite some time, apparently warming itself in the cooler temperatures of an early September day; a dragonfly's wings are like solar panels which can be tilted to catch more or less sunlight. The long, narrow body allows it to fly both forward and backward quickly. It can see in all directions - it has the largest compound eyes of any insect and its brain puts thousands of images "taken" by each of the eye's facets together in a single picture. All in all, it's a fascinating little creature.
