Description
A handsome, male, widow skimmer (Libellula luctuosa) paused for a minute on a single cattail (Thpha) leaf. A very slight breeze moved other leaves across the frame, often creating diagonal blurs in the background and/or foreground. These dragonflies are also known as king skimmers. They live near still water - lakes or ponds and slow moving streams or creeks. Adults have the blue body you see here; males develop large white spots at midwing. These insects are native to North America, especially the United States and southern Ontario and Quebec. They are welcome visitors, both because their grace and beauty delights and because, as predators, they prey on nuisance insects like mosquitoes.
