Description
When the beautiful orange and black monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) migrate south in the fall, they pause, sometimes for a few days, to rest and feed. I found these insects clustered and resting on the north side of an evergreen windbreak on a farm in western Iowa. Others fed on the nectar from wild aster and goldenrod growing alongside the narrow dirt road just to the north of the trees. The monarch is the only butterfly that makes a two-way migration; they use a combination of air currents and thermals to travel the required long distance from the northern states and southern Canada to their overwintering sites in Florida, southern California, and Mexico and back again. It takes several generations to make the entire round trip.
