Description
If you are ever in Omaha, Nebraska, with enough time to explore some of the places that are popular with locals and tourists alike, chances are you will come upon the delightful galleria known as the Old Market Passageway. This retail space was created in 1973 by Nicholas Bohham-Carter, a member of the locally influential Mercers, from two warehouses the family owned. A narrow alley separated the buildings. In the reconstruction, workers excavated it below grade, creating access to both building’s basements. They roofed over the narrow lane and paved it with salvaged brick pavers. Beyond the walls on either side are corridors that run the length of the opening on both levels. Those hallways provide access to the many boutiques, galleries, and restaurants that line them, and they also allow light to flow from the atrium to the shops through the arched openings (former windows).
This image, “From the South - Old Market Passageway”, is highly stylized and has a painted look. Its companion piece is titled “From the North - Old Market Passageway”.
“Passageway - Old Market - Omaha” is the view from the south presented in a photographic style. Its companion piece is “Passageway - Old Market - Omaha - From the North”.
You can find all four pieces in my Omaha Collection.
